Sheffield
UOTC annually organises an overseas adventure training expedition
to enable, primarily those cadets in their final year of the UOTC,
to undertake an arduous and challenging expedition. The trip also
acts to further develop their character, in line with adventure training
principles, due to the demanding nature of the training. The 2004
expedition was to Mongolia enabling this year's team members to participate
in the trekking through an arduous and remote environment such
as the Hustai N/P and the Gobi Desert Regions. Twenty SUOTC students
made up the party together with two WO2 rank instructors - Gratrick
and Ormston...

The team were met by a local travel agent in Ulaanbaatar - Mongolia
Trekking Company. We chose to use a local Trekking firm and this proved
to be excellent as they provided superb meals and local expertise with
the eastern type (unknown make) 4wd vehicles. The team spirit, motivation
and enthusiasm of all participants were evident throughout the exercise
at all times. Thank you for all your help... |
The
exercise was a success. With all of the 22 participants succeeding
in completing all activities planned. A total driving of 14 nights
were spent under canvas, a further two in a traditional Mongolian
Gers and four in hotel accommodation in Ulaanbaatar. The Gobi area
of Mongolia is an outstanding wilderness area which is reasonably
accessible and with predictable weather. Mongolia is an affordable,
friendly place to carry out adventure training, with minimal bureaucratic
problems and a variety of geographic areas to visit...

Dear
expedition members, I hereby would like to submit many thanks to all
of for your humours, kindness and hard efforts that contributed to
run the backcountry adventures smooth. Without your hearty supports

fun...
